The DPS group of companies was founded in 1976 by ex-IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) managers in South East Asia. BNBL has become an integral part of the economic fabric of Bhutan. Spun off from the Unit Trust of Bhutan, BNBL have emerged as a strongly positioned, fully-fledged bank, the activity of which includes boosting private sector participation in the economy and also playing a consistent role in the modelling of the community.

BNBL mission is to deploy the funds entrusted upon BNB by the shareholders and the public in the most effective and profitable manner.

Our Bhutan is endowed wealth of hydropower potential. The rivers, soursing from the high snow-capped mountains which travers the country in a north-south direction before joining the Brahmaputra river in India, carries around 30,000 MW of estimated hydropower potential out of which around 23,495 MW is techno-economically feasible. The idea of harnessing this vast natural wealth for the benefit of the country was conceived in the early 1970’s by the visionary and far-sighted late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and hydropower development has now taken a centre stage.

So far and up to 2008, around 4.96 percent of this vast potential amounting to 1488.66 MW has been harnessed. The Basochhu, Chhukha and Kurichhu Hydro Power Corporations were amalgamated into the Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) with effect from 1stJanuary 2008 and in April 2009, DGPC took over the Tala Hydroelectric Authority. The total installed capacity of DGPC currently stands at 1480MW. Whereas the erstwhile Corporations were set up to operate and maintain the individual plants, one of the mail reasons for amalgamating these plants and forming the DGPC was to draw on the synergies of the various plants and to enable better sharing of scarce resources.

Apart from this, the driving force behind setting up of the DGPC was for a single entity to represent the Royal Government of Bhutan’s interests in the hydropower sector and to implement the RGOB’s policy of accelerating hydropower development. DGPC is set to further grow through the amalgamation of other projects and taking up of new projects on its own or through joint ventures through private and public partnerships.

In July 2003, the Ministry of Communications was bifurcated to form two Ministries- the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Ministry of Works and Human Settlements. The creation of a new Ministry of Information and Communications was aimed at tapping the potential of rapid development in the ICT field and to also give greater attention to the development of media, transport and civil aviation sector.

With the profound impact of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) finding its way deeper into the realms of good governance, it provides a valuable tool for accelerating socio-economic development. This has particularly gained significance with the 21st century witnessing a new paradigm shift from the industrial revolution to the information age, and rapid changes taking place in other parts of the world. ICT development therefore, merits a closer attention within our overall development framework so that our efforts to achieve the goals of our development objectives are realized more efficiently.

The Ministry of Trade & Industry, which was subsequently renamed as Ministry of Economic Affairs was established in 1967. Initially, known as the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry, it was established as a full-fledged Ministry in 1968 under the reign of the third Druk Gyalpo His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, and renamed as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Forests. Presently beside the inclusion of the Power & Mining Sector it has been officially designated as the Ministry of Economic Affairs from October 17th 2007. The Ministry of Economic Affairs comprises of four technical Departments namely, the Departments of Trade, Industry, Energy and Geology and Mines besides the four service Divisions namely the Policy and Planning, Administration and Finance, Human Resource and Intellectual Property. The Ministry also has an Internal Audit Unit and six Regional Offices in Thimphu, Phuntsholing, Gelephu, Trongsa, Mongar and Samdrup Jongkhar. The total manpower in the Ministry, as of 31st August 2009, are five hundred and nineteen. Last Update 31st August, 2009.

RUB - The Royal University of Bhutan will be a highly recognized seat of excellence for tertiary educational provision that advances knowledge, improves quality of life, enhances socioeconomic development and promotes national happiness

The Royal University of Bhutan celebrated its third anniversary on 2nd June 2006. The young university is being cared and nurtured to become one of the best centers of learning at the higher education level not only in the country but also in the region. Most things are now in place for our young university to grow and reach ever higher. Due credit goes to the members of the University Council and the Academic Board for their unwavering and resolute commitment to the growth and promotion of the University. Credit is also due to the Heads of Colleges/Institutes for their co-operation and contribution. Team building/bonding amongst heads of colleges is taking roots firmly as a result of the ample opportunities made available for interaction as members of the Royal University of Bhutan.

The Postal Service in Bhutan was first launched on 10th October 1962 with the opening of a post office in Phuentsholing. In the same year, post offices were also opened in Paro and Thimphu. It was called the Department  of Posts and Telegraphs and placed under the Ministry of Communications. This was the initial step taken by the Royal Government to provide a uniform means of communication throughout the country. The policy was initiated on eve of the 1st Five Year Plan, noting the importance of the existence of a uniform means of communication throughout the country to the achievement of a balanced socio-economic development.
